The Environment theme promotes students’ environmental awareness in the context of port activities and marine transportation. The big ideas of Community, Connectedness, Interconnectedness and Interdependence frame students’ exploration of the built and natural environments of the port terminals in Prince Rupert. The earlier grades incorporate learning about the structures at the port terminals, while later elementary to middle school students map natural places in and around the community. High school students identify the possible impacts of port related activity on the environment and approaches to mitigating such impacts.
